Colour is the primary quality driver for amethyst. The most valued shade is a rich, medium-to-dark purple with reddish undertones — sometimes called “Siberian” amethyst after the historic Russian deposits. Lighter lavender amethysts are softer and more feminine. Very dark amethyst can appear almost black in low light, which reduces its appeal. The sweet spot for earrings is a vibrant medium purple that shows its colour clearly in all lighting conditions.

Amethyst is an excellent gemstone for earrings because of its hardness (7 on the Mohs scale) and availability in large, clean stones at accessible prices. Unlike emeralds or rubies, eye-clean amethysts are the norm rather than the exception. This means you can focus on colour and cut quality without worrying about visible inclusions.
