Best Metals for Engraving

Stainless steel is durable and takes laser engraving cleanly, though hand engraving is difficult due to its hardness. Titanium accepts laser engraving well and resists wear, but cannot be hand-engraved. Tungsten carbide is extremely hard — only laser engraving works, and the results are permanent because the surface barely wears.

Inside vs Outside Engraving

Inside engraving is private — only you know it is there. It suits personal messages, dates, and hidden sentiments. Outside engraving is visible and decorative — monograms, patterns, or meaningful symbols on the outer band. Mens engravable rings with outside engraving become more of a fashion piece. Inside engraving does not affect the look of the ring at all, making it the safer option if you want to keep things understated.

Ring Width and Engraving Space

Narrow bands (4-5 mm) limit engraving to a few characters or a short word. Standard width (6-8 mm) fits a date, two names, or a short phrase comfortably. Wide bands (8-10 mm+) give room for longer text, multiple lines, or image-based engravings. If you have a specific message in mind, confirm the character limit with the jeweller before ordering.

Practical Considerations

Engraving adds a few days to delivery time — factor that in if it is a gift with a deadline. Confirm the spelling three times before approving. Most jewellers let you preview the engraving layout digitally before cutting. Avoid engraving anything you might regret — unlike a tattoo, a ring can be resized or refinished, but deep engraving is permanent. Some metals (tungsten, ceramic) cannot be resized at all, so get the fit right the first time.
